Athenry’s Market Square space tradi琀椀onally func琀椀oned
as the central market and town assembly space. It has
lost many of its tradi琀椀onal ‘market town’ func琀椀ons. The
uses for which these spaces were originally laid out have
become almost en琀椀rely car dominated rendering them
largely unusable for many of their original func琀椀ons,
hos琀椀le to pedestrians and town centre communi琀椀es.
The Athenry Market Square Public Realm Enhancement
Project has been developed with the overriding
aim of realising the poten琀椀al of the town centre to
become a more central part of community life within
the town by increasing the volume and quality of
interac琀椀ons with town centre spaces and developing
a new town centre based around pedestrian culture.
This is 昀椀rst step in unlocking the poten琀椀al of and
s琀椀mula琀椀ng private sector ac琀椀vity within the town
centre. It will involve a total regenera琀椀on and respec琀昀ul
modernising of the public realm of Athenry’s town core
in order to create a more vibrant and prosperous town
centre.
