Carbon Life Cycle Assessment Software
Sustainability is a Core Value in TOBIN and as part of our commitment to sustainability
we o昀昀er a specialist Carbon Life Cycle Assessment service to our clients.
TOBIN has invested in industry-leading
Carbon Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software
(OneClickLCA®). Using this software, TOBIN
calculate the carbon footprint of a design
(expressed as GWP (Global Warming Potential,
in tCO2e) for an infrastructure project across its
life cycle from feasibility through to construction
and end use.
Climate change is presenting us with new and
evolving challenges to ensure sustainability in
all aspects of society, including the 昀椀eld of engineering design. The Paris Agreement is
not just a pledge to limit greenhouse gas emission and the increase of global average
temperatures, it is legally binding. Ireland has implemented legislation to achieve a
climate neutral economy by 2050. To achieve this goal, targets for carbon emissions
over 昀椀ve-year periods have been speci昀椀ed. With the imposition of these carbon
budgets and sector ceiling emissions, it is becoming mandatory to quantify the carbon
emissions from projects to ensure that these targets can be achieved.
Our specialist software allows TOBIN to produce
Carbon Life Cycle Assessment Reports that
compare a range of design options to minimize
carbon footprint through all phases of a project,
from the product stage, through construction and
operation, to end of life/decommissioning. Using
this software, we can advise clients on the choice
of materials and construction methodologies to
minimize embodied carbon.
Our Carbon Life Cycle Assessment service
includes an assessment of operational carbon
during the use phase. Typically, this is dictated
by energy use, and in particular electricity use.
Using the Marginal Electricity Emissions Factors for Ireland’s projected future energy
mix for power generation (tCO2-eq per kWh) published by SEAI, and adopted by the
Department of Public Expenditure NDP Delivery and Reform, we calculate the carbon

footprint for the electricity consumed during the use phase. This is then merged with
the embodied carbon to give a complete life cycle picture of GWP for a project.
This service assists clients in meeting their carbon reduction targets under the Climate
Action Plan and is of particular bene昀椀t to any project that is publicly funded, where there
is a requirement under Green Public Procurement to demonstrate carbon reduction
measures.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is incorporated into ISO14000 (as ISO 14040/14044),
and the software is fully compliant with the methodology for Life Cycle Assessment set
out in PAS2080 Carbon Management in Buildings and Infrastructure.
This software draws on a worldwide database of over 150,000 construction products to
estimate the embodied carbon in a design, which is the carbon footprint (in tCO2e) of
the product stage (A1-3) and construction stage (A4-5) of a project.
